2021 Volkswagen Atlas

The Exterior
One of my favorite things about the Atlas is the front end. It looks wide, athletic, and premium with its large grille, contrasting chrome elements, and sculpted hood lines. It has a presence — the good kind. Around the back, the wraparound taillights, chrome bar, ATLAS lettering, and squared-off exhaust tips make it feel substantial without being flashy.
Engine Options & Towing
The 2021 Atlas comes with two engines:
- 2.0L 4-cylinder (tows 2,500 lbs)
- 3.6L V6 (tows up to 5,000 lbs)
I’ve driven both, and personally, the V6 feels noticeably zippier. If you plan to tow anything, or just prefer a more confident driving experience, the V6 is worth it.
First Row
Inside, the Atlas is simple in the best way. Volkswagen uses clean lines, durable materials, and a functional layout that doesn’t feel cheap — just purposeful.
Driver Comfort
The seats are wide, which I love. I never feel overlapped or squeezed in, and this comfort continues through all three rows. They are a bit firmer than some competitors but still comfortable for daily driving.
The cabin is uncluttered:
- A responsive touchscreen with actual shortcut buttons
- Physical climate control buttons (thank you!)
- Deep cubbies and a large center console
- A beautiful digital gauge cluster that feels modern and sporty
Oh — and the cup holders? Some of the best in the game. I’ve put everything in them, including a giant Gatorade and a 54 oz water bottle. They can handle it.
Storage Highlights
- Massive center console (I stored jammies, diapers, wipes, toys, water bottles — still had room)
- Large side door pockets (my Bissell vacuum fits — that’s the test)
- Multiple USBs + 12V outlet
It’s a mom’s cockpit done right.
Second Row
Jumping into the second row, I have plenty of room with the front seat set for me and I’m about 6 feet tall. As far as amenities, I have sunshades, great cubby spaces, 2 USBs, and climate control. But I’m missing ceiling vents. There are vents down below, but with car seats ceiling vents make a big difference. One of the reasons why I love this car so much is how wide the bench is. It is a gret option for families who need to do three across.
The VW Atlas has three sets of lower anchors in the second row. That extra set of lower anchors really gives you some good car seat flexibility. It doesn’t have any lower anchors in the third row, but it does have tether anchors in all 5 seats in the second and third row. And like I mentioned earlier, it has the car seat tilt so you can access the third row even when car seats are installed using the lower anchors.
Third Row
Access to the third row is my favorite. Not only does the second row slide forward and back, but it also has the car seat tilt so I can tilt the seat forward while keeping a car seat installed. It’s amazing. Sitting in the third row, I have lots of room even with the second row pushed all the way back. And since VW didn’t try to squish 3 seats back here (there are only 2) the seats are so much more comfortable. We also have vents on the side, 2 and half cup holders and lights.

Trunk
These mid-size, 7-passenger SUVs are not known for their roomy trunk space, but the trunk in the Atlas is one of the largest. The only mid size SUVs with a larger trunk are the Buick Enclave and Chevy Traverse. My Uppababy Vista fits back here with a little bit of extra space to put things in the side compartments. I can lift and lower the third row from the trunk, making for tons of trunk space.
